Driving in Belgium
Like the majority of Europe, in Belgium, cars drive on the right and pass on the left. Take care where you pass, as certain areas are prohibited, including railroad crossings, traffic ramps and crosswalks.
You can rent a car in Belgium with a US driver’s license.
Paid parking zones are regulated by parking meters or automatic machines, with different payment methods. Blue markings are used to indicated paid parking areas.
At the moment, Belgian motorways do not have tolls.
The maximum speed limit for vehicles driving on freeways and four-lane roads is 120 km/h. On roads outside of urban areas, there are maximum speeds of 90 km/h (in the Wallonia and Brussels region), whereas it is 70 km/h in the Flemish region.
In urban areas the speed limit decreases to 50 km/h and for strictly residential areas, it is 20 km/h.
